Breast Reduction Surgery

Breast Reduction is a surgical procedure designed for women with large, pendulous breasts that pose health problems. This procedure can also reduce the size of the areola and the darker skin surrounding the nipple. The goal of breast reduction is to give the woman smaller, better-shaped breasts in proportion with the rest of her body.

I. What is involved in a Breast Reduction Surgery?

Breast Reductions are usually done on an out-patient basis, but in some cases may require an overnight stay. It is necessary however, to have someone pick you up after the procedure, take you home, and stay with you for at least 24 hours. The actual reduction procedure generally takes one to three hours per breast.

The procedure involves an anchor-shaped incision that circles the dark pigmented area around the areola so that it can be repositioned to a higher location, continues downward, and follows the natural curve of the fold beneath the breast. The nipple itself is not removed however.

II. Preparations and Precautions for a Breast Reduction Surgery

Prior to the breast reduction procedure, your surgeon will normally ask you to get a mammogram. During your initial consultation, he will discuss with you the changes that you would like to make to change your appearance as well as give you specific instructions to assist you in preparing for this procedure.

Immediately following your breast reduction procedure, your surgeon will place you in a surgical bra which you will be required to wear for seven to ten days. It will take six to eight weeks after your procedure for your breasts to obtain their final shape. At first they may be somewhat bruised and swollen, but will gradually fade. As with any breast procedure, small nerves to the skin are interrupted and may cause numbness of the areola for several weeks.

III. What Results can I expect after my Breast Reduction?

Of all plastic surgery procedures, breast reduction results in the quickest body-image changes. You'll be free of the physical uneasiness of oversized breasts, and your body will look better proportioned. Most women report that the results from breast reduction are so favorable, that concern about scars is minimal.
